About Us

The Harrisburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on May 28, 1960. The charter members were Attorney William Atkins, Leroy Craig, Barton Fields, Robert Hanna, Rev. Clarence Henderson, Rev. H. Garnett Lee, Horatio Leftwich and William Thompson. The chapter thrived until 1967 when many of the members who were government employees were relocated; thus the chapter was inactive for three years.

In September 1970...

..With the assistance of Past Province Polemarch Albert Oliver, the chapter was reactivated. Members at the time were William Adkins, William Diggs, Michael Drake, Barton Fields, Homer Floyd, Donald Gibson, Ike Golden, Rev. Clarence Henderson, Steve Howard, Robert Jackson, Rev. H. Garnett Lee, Horatio Leftwich, Willie Nelson, Attorney Richard Scott and Herman B. Thomas, Jr..

In April 1971, Harrisburg Alumni answered the roll at the 40th Annual Northeastern Province Council that was held in Hartford, Connecticut. Delegates to this meeting were Polemarch Robert Jackson, Michael Drake, Ike Golden, Willie Nelson and Herman B. Thomas, Jr. Harrisburg Alumni has not missed a single roll call since. Some ten years later, Harrisburg Alumni hosted its first Province Council Meeting in 1981, and again in 1993.

Harrisburg Alumni has initiated over thirty new brothers into the chapter: Sam Cooper, John Coy, Chukwudi F. Igwe, Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Green, Richard Gilchrist, Howard Hall, Hyland Hubbard, Ray Janifer, Kenneth Johnson, Larry Jordan, Oliver La Grone, Larry Lawson, Robert Lynch, Andrew Marshall, William Mathis, Jimmie McFarland, William McKeever, Melvin Melendez, Isom Mobley, Reizdan Moore, Johnny Pearce, LaShawne Pryor, Carlton Randolph, Ramone Sagree, Charles Sears, Gerand Thomas, Lonnie Tolbert, Lonnie Walker, Warren Whitaker, Brian White, Jerome Williams, Irving Wright, Justin V. Thomas, Mark Cobb, Ian Tate, Fateen Bullock, and Dontie Brooks.

Harrisburg Alumni has been privileged to have several members of the chapter hold offices on the Provincial and National levels...

Attorney Richard Scott served as Polemarch of the Northeastern Province and as a member of the Grand Board of Directors; Attorney Reginald Guy served as Senior Vice Polemarch of the Northeastern Province; Brother Herman B. Thomas Jr., served as Northeastern Province Keeper of Records and Polemarch of the Northeastern Province.; Brother Jeff Mack has served as the Southern Region Board Member of the Northeastern Province; Brother Koreem Bell has served as the Assistant Keeper of Records for the Northeastern Province; and Brother Earl F. Merritt is the current Advisor Chairperson for the Northeastern Province. Past Province Polemarchs Richard Scott and Herman B. Thomas, Jr. are also recipients of the Highest Award that the Northeastern Province can bestow, the James M. Kidd Award for Distinguished Service.  Finally, on the National level, Brother Herman B. Thomas, Jr. served as Chair of the Grand Chapter Nominating Committee.

Harrisburg Alumni was awarded the Northeastern Province Alumni Chapter of the year in 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987. Harrisburg Alumni’s most recent chapter Polemarchs include: Chris Hailey (1999-2001), Jeffrey Mack, (2001-2004), Earl F. Merritt (2004-2007, 2011-), and Koreem Bell (2008-2011). Harrisburg Alumnni Chapter is responsible for the supervision of the following Harrisburg Area Chapters: Delta Theta (Penn State University), Kappa Omega (Shippensburg University), Lambda Alpha (Bloomsburg University), Lambda Tau (Millersville University), Mu Beta (East Stroudsburg University), Nu Phi (Lock Haven University), Xi Eta (Mansfield University), Xi Kappa (Bucknell University), and Pi Psi (Penn State University- Harrisburg Campus).

The chapter participates in civic programs such as...

Our National Guide Right initiative, programs for the youth, canned food drives for the needy, voter registration campaigns, youth orientation activities such as skating parties, etc., YMCA membership drives, prostate cancer awareness workshops, scholarship programs for college bound students, walks for AIDS and breast cancer awareness, Highmark’s Walk for a Healthy Community, Keystone Human Service’s Chocolate fest, and city rallies for the war on drugs. Additionally, the chapter continues to provide a variety of activities to meet the social needs of our local residents such as the Annual Kappa Boat Ride every Memorial Day weekend, in which a major portion of the proceeds goes to the Dr. Jesse A. Bryan Scholarship, which awards a high school senior $1,000 for their first year of college, the Annual Black and White formal gala, and Guide Right activities at the Nativity School of Harrisburg. Other activities include semi-formal dinner dances, bowling parties, and Greek step shows, the proceeds of which benefit a charitable cause.
